The Beverly Hills Police always kept a close eye on Cornero and described him as an “unsavory” character.  He was careful not to bring his dangerous vices and illegal pursuits within city limits and rather pursued his interests in opening up gambling resorts just south of the California border in Baja, Mexico.  Drawing on his capital and gambling expertise, he made plans to open up several new casinos that would, finally, be outside the reach of government officials and greedy mobsters that plagued him in the United States.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t long before trouble followed him home.  Esteban "La Serpiente" and sidekick Gordo pushed their way into his Beverly Hills home at 6:45 p.m. on February 9, 1948.  The sound of several gunshots echoed around Cornero’s normally quiet street in Beverly Hills and he collapsed with a stomach full of bullets. The following day the banner headline of the Tijuana Times boldly stated “Gambling would be allowed in Baja, but only if Cornero was eliminated.”
