Cornero’s greatest discovery may have been his talented cabaret singer Pearl Leigh.  Despite the efforts of the other performers and vindictive flapper girls to paint a dark picture of Cornero and his seaboard operations, Pearl saw the Rex as an opportunity to move up in the world. She wanted to make the ship her home and she quickly became a crowd favorite. She also caught the attention of Cornero, in more ways than one. He offered her the headlining spot and she soon became his close friend, confidant and protector. Pearl was extremely loyal and another set of watchful eyes on board the Rex. Well rewarded, she soon rose to become madam of the ship.

I hear 'em whisper that Tony's no good

he runs a dirty rotten brotherhood

(we) get barely pennies to put on our show

the girls keep saying I should just go

but at night

I get down on my knees and pray

that he'll ask me to stay

and I'll call it home

I'll call it home

you sinners at sea, keep your hands to yourselves

I'm only looking for a man of wealth

all you flapper girls with your jealousy

nobody's getting the best of me

SONG

LYRICS

cause tonight

I get down on my knees and pray

that I'm here to stay

cause I call it home

I call it home

thugs and hustlers, broken dreams

gin that tastes like kerosene

rebels, crooks, and hooligans

filthy crimes and decadence

tonight

I get down on my knees and pray

that I'm here to stay

cause I call it home

I call it home
