SHIP GOING DOWN

Cornero’s high sea ventures frequently made front-page news and Attorney General Warren wasted no time in seizing the opportunity. He set his sights on the shipboard gambling rigs and persuaded fellow lawmakers to declare the Rex and Tango within U.S. waters, subjecting them to U.S law and anti-gambling regulations.

Soon Warren organized a series of raids against Cornero’s ships. He set off from the Santa Monica pier with boatloads of officials and the Coast Guard in tow. They attempted to board Warren’s first target, the Rex. Pearl Leigh, at the helm, refused to let Warren and his men aboard. Deeming their actions an abomination amounting to “piracy on the high seas” Cornero turned the ships’ fire hoses on approaching boats.

In retaliation, Warren surrounded the Rex and announced that he was “prepared to besiege them until they gave up.” Cornero replied that he would “go down with this ship” but finally surrendered nine days later. The fight was over!

SONG LYRICS

Black like the night

And my hearts gone cold

Your gonna learn to bow

Down to a man

And a city that know

That your time's just run out

So he ain't allowed to be pretty

No ma'am

I guess he ain't allowed to be proud

That's right

And it ain't gonna matter if he'll sink or swim

Cause he's gonna learn to drown!

Oh, Cornero must go

Heavy is the head, who wears the crown

You ain't got no rights, your just a

Ship going down

The gates of the Rex

Well I'll break them down

Your sins are going to cease to shine

All of your women and gambling kin

Well ya'll be doing time

So he ain't allowed to be pretty

No he ain't

I guess he ain't allowed to be proud

That's right

And it ain't gonna matter if he'll sink or swim

Cause he's gonna learn to drown!

Oh, Cornero must go

Heavy is the head, who wears the crown

You ain't got no rights, your just a

Ship going down
